Sunderland have confirmed that they will appeal Wes Brown's red card against Stoke City.

The defender was controversially dismissed by referee Kevin Friend after appearing to win the ball fairly from Charlie Adam during the Premier League encounter on Saturday.

The Black Cats went on to lose the match 2-0 at the Britannia Stadium thanks to goals from Adam and Steven N'Zonzi.

Sunderland return to Premier League action on Saturday when they make the trip to Aston Villa.
