Gus Poyet hails Sunderland's "perfect" Burnley victory

Gus Poyet is both delighted and relieved with Sunderland's "perfect" win over Burnley as both Connor Wickham and Jermain Defoe score in a 2-0 home victory.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has described Saturday's victory over Burnley as "perfect" as both of his strikers scored in a 2-0 win in the Premier League.

Connor Wickham opened the scoring at the Stadium of Light before Jermain Defoe got himself off the mark for the Black Cats with a second prior to the break.

While insisting that he was very happy with Sunderland's afternoon's work, Poyet admitted that the result came as a relief following four defeats during a five-match winless run in the top flight.

"I have a mixture of happiness and relief. We needed a performance and a victory like today, so it was very welcome," he told BBC Sport.

"We knew Burnley and the situation we were in, so we needed to be very good with commitment, desire and a fighting spirit. we needed to impose our quality, and when we did we created the chances. Then we needed to impose ourselves with quality.

"We kept a clean sheet and the two strikers who started today scored, so it's a perfect result for us. I knew that Jermain would score sooner or later because his qualities are there. I want this to be a turning point. I hope we will go into the next game with the confidence we were looking for."

The victory was just Sunderland's fourth in the league this season and took them up to 14th in the table.
