Gus Poyet defends Ashley Young over diving claims

Poyet defends Young over diving claims

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has leapt to the defence of Ashley Young after the Manchester United winger was booked for diving during today's match between the two sides.

Young went down theatrically under the challenge of Wes Brown inside the box during the second half but, instead of pointing to the spot, referee Martin Atkinson showed the United man a yellow card.

The incident is the latest in a line of diving claims aimed at Young, and Poyet believes that his reputation preceded him at the Stadium of Light this afternoon.

"It was tough on Ashley. The only problem with Ashley is his reputation. Before he even went for that ball, everybody was expecting him to jump, but that reputation is unfortunate," he told reporters.

"I didn't think it was a yellow card. I am not sure if it was a penalty. It was one of those that is even difficult for the referee. Either way, some people will be upset, some people will be happy.

"It was one of those. It was a difficult 50-50 and the outcome was only because of what has happened in the past and it's not fair on him. I don't like it."

The Black Cats came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw in the match, with Jack Rodwell's header cancelling out Juan Mata's opener.
