Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan has quit international football with Ghana "indefinitely" after failing to help his side to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Gyan, who is on loan at United Arab Emirates outfit Al-Ain this season, missed a penalty in the semi-final against eventual winners Zambia.
The 26-year-old has come under personal pressure after his miss from 12 yards, which echoed a similar failure in the dying moments of the 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay, which Ghana also went on to lose.
The West African country's football association (GFA) has responded to the announcement and says that they are in talks to try to change Gyan's mind.
The GFA statement described his decision as "temporary" and added that it came because the player was "frustrated over the verbal abuse he has received" since the end of the Nations Cup.
