Ex-Tottenham Hotspur striker Teddy Sheringham advises Harry Kane to leave the club if he wants to win trophies.

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur striker Teddy Sheringham has advised Harry Kane to leave the club in order to fulfil his silverware ambitions.

The England captain will celebrate his 29th birthday in July but is set to end another season without a trophy following Spurs' elimination from the FA Cup.

Kane is yet to win a piece of silverware during his time in North London, with the Lilywhites' most recent major trophy coming in the 2007-08 EFL Cup, and Sheringham does not expect the striker to win major honours at Tottenham.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Sheringham said: "He's the best number nine in the world for me. He's been the best for the last four or five years. Keeps proving it year in and year out.

"Without a doubt (he's going to catch Shearer's record) I mean he's probably got five years left at the top. The way he scores goals every year - without a doubt.

"He's got to eye up the situation - the same as what I did really. Short career, you get probably 12-14 years if you're lucky. He's coming into a crossroads in his career of 'what do I do, do I stay at a club which might challenge or do I go somewhere I know they're going to challenge'.

"If I was advising him, you want to play at the top level, you want to play in Champions League finals, you want to be playing for the league title. If you want to do that, I think he needs to leave."

Kane struck his 175th and 176th Premier League goals in Monday's 5-0 rout of Everton to surpass Thierry Henry in the all-time top scorer charts.
