Late Harry Kane own goal undermines Tottenham Hotspur

Sunderland salvage a late draw at home to Spurs courtesy of Harry Kane's 82nd-minute own goal.

Harry Kane scored an 82nd-minute own goal as Sunderland salvaged a 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

Goals in both halves from Nacer Chadli and Christian Eriksen had set Spurs up for a fifth successive 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light.

However, Kane deflected a Jordi Gomez free kick past Hugo Lloris with eight minutes of normal time remaining to deny the visitors three points.

Redemption was the theme for Tottenham after suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Liverpool prior to the international break.

Spurs looked keen to get that loss out of their system, and they made good inroads toward achieving that when Chadli fired them ahead early on.

Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone parried away Emmanuel Adebayor's effort, but Chadli was on hand to poke the rebound into the corner for his third of the season.

Their lead lasted barely more than a minute, however, as Adam Johnson worked his way into the area before his deflected shot deceived Lloris.

The visitors were unlucky not to move ahead once again seven minutes before the break, as Moussa Dembele saw his 25-yard shot thump off the crossbar.

Mauricio Pochettino's side began the second half in the same fashion and took the lead three minutes after the break.

Chadli turned provider, driving a ball across the face of the goal as Eriksen slid home to give Tottenham the lead.

Erik Lamela was then denied his first Premier League goal by the woodwork, collecting a pass from Dembele before curling against the crossbar on 75 minutes.

It proved a decisive moment in the game, as Gomez lined up a free kick just outside the box before seeing his cross diverted into the net by Kane, shortly after his arrival off the bench.

It could, and perhaps should, have got better for the Black Cats as second-half substitute Will Buckley missed a gilt-edged chance late on by firing over the Spurs crossbar from inside the area.
