Pochettino: 'Spurs do not need trophies'

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that he is "not obsessed" with winning trophies.

Pochettino's work with Spurs has been widely lauded, helping the club become the main title challengers in each of the past two seasons and again competing for the top four this time around.

However, critics have suggested that he must end Tottenham's 10-year trophy drought to truly mark his progress at the club, which is a view Pochettino does not subscribe to.

Asked if he needed silverware, the Argentine told reporters: "No, I don't feel that. Of course, the intention and desire is to win but I am not obsessed to win, win, win, win. We need a strong team and a winning mentality.

"For that you need time. You never know, in one, two, three or five years. We are in a good place, waiting for the new stadium, which will be an amazing thing or us, the fans and the club.

"With the facilities we have to work with, if everything continues in this way then Tottenham will be one of the contenders to win trophies. We want to win a trophy because I did it as a player and I know how you feel afterwards."

Spurs will face Newport County in an FA Cup fourth-round replay on Wednesday, although they are expected to heavily rotate their side with Arsenal and Juventus to come in successive matches after that.
