Toby Alderweireld nearing Tottenham Hotspur return

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino reveals that Toby Alderweireld could be fit to return from injury against Manchester United this weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Toby Alderweireld is nearing a return from injury.

Alderweireld has been sidelined for almost two months with a knee injury he sustained during a Premier League clash with West Bromwich Albion in October.

However, Pochettino has confirmed that the Belgian will be in the squad for Wednesday's Champions League match with CSKA Moscow and could be in line to start against Manchester United at the weekend.

"Toby will be involved in the squad tomorrow. We're happy. He is recovering well," Pochettino told reporters.

"It's important for him after two months to be involved in the squad. Tomorrow, maybe he will be on the bench, it is important for him to recover that feeling.

"Then we'll decide if he will be in the starting XI or on the bench against Manchester United. It's about performance, it's about feeling, it's about how we assess him."

Erik Lamela has also been out for six weeks with a hip injury, and Pochettino revealed that the Argentine has now returned home to visit his brother in hospital.

"Erik Lamela is still out. It's important to send our support because he has a problem with his family in Argentina and travelled to Argentina last night," he added.

"We want to send our big support to him and his family. He has a problem with his brother. We hope it's not too serious, but it's an issue that he needed to go to Argentina for."

Spurs can no longer qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League, but will book their place in the Europa League knockout stages if they avoid defeat at Wembley.
