Tottenham Hotspur through to FA Cup fourth round

Clint Dempsey scores twice for Tottenham Hotspur as Andre Villas-Boas's side defeat Coventry City 3-0 in the FA Cup third round.

Tottenham Hotspur have progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Coventry City at home.

Andre Villas-Boas's side were in control of the match right from the start and pulled ahead in the 14th minute, Clint Dempsey shooting from close range after being released by Gareth Bale.

The American returned the favour to his Welsh teammate just after the half-hour mark when he set up Bale for an easy finish.

Spurs headed into the half-time interval 3-0 up, Dempsey and Bale once again combining. Bale whipped in a corner that the 29-year-old headed home from close range.

Steven Caulker came close twice to adding to Spurs' tally in the opening minutes of the second half, but failed to keep his attempts on target on both occasions.

Coventry had a good chance to pull one back midway through the second period when William Edjenguele took an attempt on the Tottenham goal, but Brad Friedel made a good save.

Dempsey could have completed his hat-trick in the latter stages of the half if he had been able to shoot on target from outside the Coventry 18-yard box.
