Jan Vertonghen happy with Sheriff Tiraspol win

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen admits that he was relieved that his side held on to beat Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen believes that Sheriff Tiraspol are the best team that his side have faced in the Europa League this season.

Vertonghen netted the opener as Spurs recorded a 2-0 win, and the Belgium international was impressed with the performance of the Moldovan champions.

The 26-year-old told the London Evening Standard: "It's the best team that we've played so far this season in the Europa League, so it's a good result for us.

"It wasn't our best game but we kept a clean sheet and we won a difficult away game, so we can be happy.

"It was nice because I haven't scored this season, so it's good to have my first goal."

Victory for Spurs took them to the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.
