Inter Milan fightback stuns Tottenham Hotspur at San Siro

Inter Milan net two goals in the closing stages to register a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Tuesday's Champions League clash at San Siro.

Inter Milan have netted two late goals to register a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Tuesday's Champions League clash at San Siro.

Christian Eriksen had given Spurs a second-half lead and the Premier League outfit appeared on course to return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats on the domestic scene.

However, a late wonder strike from Mauro Icardi and a header from Matias Vecino in added-on time gave Inter all three points, which moves Luciano Spalletti's side level on points with Barcelona at the top of Group B after the Catalan giants eased past PSV Eindhoven.

Both teams made a positive start to the game in Italy, but the two sides struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities from open play as both goalkeepers remained untested.

The first shot of the contest came from an Eriksen free kick just before the quarter-of-an-hour mark, but the Dane's well-struck effort was punched clear by Samir Handanovic.

Inter responded with a speculative strike from Vecino which went well over the bar, but the home outfit started to control the rhythm of the game and were forcing Michel Vorm to remain alert with crosses sent into the penalty area.

Marcelo Brozovic also drilled a shot wide of the target, but Spurs ended the half strongly and could have taken the lead through Harry Kane after the forward was found by a floated pass from Eriksen.

The England international successfully controlled the ball and rounded Handanovic, but the striker's touch was too heavy and it prevented him from being able to get an effort away from an acute angle.

Inter were the better side after the restart, but Spurs went ahead against the run of play with Eriksen sending a deflected volley over Handanovic after the goalkeeper had pulled off a solid save to keep out the midfielder's low drive seconds earlier.

The home team wasted no time in going back onto the front foot and Ivan Perisic should have done better with a header at the back post, but the winger's effort from 10 yards went straight at Vorm.

Inter were committing men forward, but that allowed Spurs to pose a threat on the break and Erik Lamela was denied by Handanovic when his 20-yard strike looked destined for the bottom corner.

Spurs began to look comfortable as the game progressed through to a conclusion, and the introduction of Harry Winks indicated that Mauricio Pochettino was prepared to try to see the match out.

However, with four minutes remaining, Icardi scored one of this season's great goals as the Argentine found the bottom corner of Vorm's net with a first-time volley from 20 yards, meeting a lofted cross from Kwadwo Asamoah.

Spurs were suddenly looking to hold on to a point but in the second minute of added-on time, Inter completed the turnaround as Vecino headed home from close range after Stefan de Vrij had been given the chance to head the ball into the danger area from a corner.

INTER MILAN (4-2-3-1): Handanovic; Skriniar, de Vrij, Miranda, Asamoah; Brozovic, Vecino; Politano (Keita 72'), Nainggolan (Valero 89'), Perisic (Candreva 64'); Icardi

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (4-2-3-1): Vorm; Aurier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Dembele; Eriksen, Lamela (Winks 72'), Son (Moura 64'); Kane (Rose 90')
