Ruben Amorim receives mixed reaction in first Sporting Lisbon game since Man United appointment

How did Sporting fans react to Amorim's first game since Man United appointment?

Ruben Amorim received a mixed reaction in Sporting Lisbon's first match since he was appointed Manchester United's head coach.

Earlier on Friday, Man United confirmed that they had appointed Amorim as their new head coach following the recent dismissal of Erik ten Hag.

Man United have agreed to pay €11m (£9.25m) to Sporting prise Amorim and his staff away from the Portuguese giants.

However, Amorim will stay in his post as Sporting boss until the next international window, before he officially takes over the reins at Old Trafford on Monday 11.

As a result of that agreement, Amorim was in the dugout for Sporting's Primeira Liga clash against Estrela Amadora on Friday evening.

Amorim receives applause and harsh message from Sporting supporters

Prior to the game, the departing manager was given a standing ovation from Sporting fans at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

While Amorim may have been greeted with a good reception in the stadium, that feeling of appreciation did not stretch outside the home of the Portuguese giants.

A banner hung on a building outside the stadium read: "Amorim, this is no longer your home, thank you!!"

Although Sporting fans may been split before the game, they would have all been pleased with the result in Friday's home league clash.

Viktor Gyokeres, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, scored Sporting's first four goals in a dominant victory to move onto 12 league goals for the season.

Maximiliano Araujo then got his name on the scoresheet to wrap up a 5-1 win, ensuring that the league leaders still boast a 100% record.

What next for Amorim and Sporting?

Amorim will now turn his focus to his final two matches as Sporting boss before he swaps the Portuguese top flight for the Premier League.

The 39-year-old will have the chance to endear himself to his new club when Sporting take on Manchester City in Tuesday's Champions League clash.

Amorim will be looking to get the better of Man United's local rivals in what will be his final home game as Sporting manager.

After going up against the Premier League champions, he will then say his official goodbyes with an away league game against Braga on November 10.

Having seen his side win 13 of their last 14 matches, Amorim will hope to claim a couple more victories to sign off in style.
