Spain's Sergio Ramos keen to move on from Croatia loss

Ramos keen to move on from Croatia loss

Spain captain Sergio Ramos has called on his team to "turn the page" after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in Tuesday night's Group D decider at Euro 2016.

La Roja entered the match needing a point to be sure of topping the section, but Ramos missed a penalty when the scores were level, before Ivan Perisic won it for Croatia three minutes from time.

The Real Madrid centre-back, however, is keen for the defending champions to "move on" as they prepare to take on Italy in the round of 16 on Monday.

"Honestly it was a strange game because at first we dominated and we missed a penalty, but that's football. They managed to score with the few chances they had but we have to think of it as we have qualified even if we face a more difficult opponent," Ramos told Telecinco.

"In general the team was good. Tiredness is no excuse. It was an unusual game because we could have had a favourable result and qualified in first place. Now we need to turn the page and learn from this type of match so it doesn't happen again.

"Now we dance with those who are in principle the favourites, but to be the champions we have to beat the best. We have to move on and think already of our next opponent."

Spain's defeat to Croatia was their first loss in the finals of the European Championships since 2004.
