Netherlands centre-back Virgil van Dijk says that he is "giving 100%" for Southampton, and is "happy" at the Premier League club.

Virgil van Dijk has insisted that he is "giving 100%" for Southampton, and is "happy" at the Premier League club.

The 26-year-old was strongly linked with a move away from the Saints during the summer transfer window, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City credited with an interest.

The Netherlands international is understood to have refused to play for Southampton during pre-season, and he did not feature for his English club until the middle of September.

While it had been thought that Van Dijk would push for a move in January, the defender has claimed that he is currently content with life at St Mary's.

"Firstly, I don't think it's appropriate to comment on anything that happened before," Van Dijk told the Daily Star. "But I am giving 100% for the club.

"I work hard every day, I help my teammates, I'm positive and I want to win every game. I am happy and that's the most important thing so we will just see what happens."

Van Dijk joined Southampton from Celtic in the summer of 2015.
