Watford and Southampton shared a goalless draw in their Premier League meeting at Vicarage Road in the Premier League this afternoon.

Both sides had chances throughout the match, but they were unable to break the deadlock.

The result leaves the Hornets with draws in their first three fixtures of the new season, while Southampton have just two points from a possible nine so far.

Good afternoon! Two sides still looking to pick up their first wins of the season meet at Vicarage Road this afternoon, as top-flight newcomers Watford host Ronald Koeman's Southampton. The team news has just been announced, so let's take a look at the lineups.

WATFORD STARTING XI: Gomes, Nyom, Cathcart, Prodl, Holebas, Capoue, Behrami, Jurado, Ighalo, Anya, Deeney

SOUTHAMPTON STARTING XI: Stekelenburg, Cedric, Yoshida, Fonte, Davis, Mane, Wanyama, Romeu, Pelle, Caulker, Targett

WATFORD SUBSTITUTES: Arlauskis, Britos, Watson, Layun, Abdi, Forestieri, Diamanti

SOUTHAMPTON SUBSTITUTES: Davis, Long, Rodriguez, Tadic, Martina, Ward-Prowse, Juanmi

For the home side, there's just one change to the starting lineup following last week's goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion. Jose Holebas gets the nod in defence ahead of Miguel Layun. However, possibly the most interesting news for Quique Sanchez Flores's side is the inclusion of Alessandro Diamanti on the bench. He only came in on loan this week, so obviously isn't ready to start, but the manager will surely be keen to send him on for his debut in front of the home fans in the second half.

The visitors have made three changes following their 1-1 draw with Danish side FC Midtjylland on Thursday, with Jay Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse dropping to the bench, allowing Cedric Soares and Steven Davis to come in.

It's been pretty rainy at Vicarage Road this afternoon, as this vine from Southampton's Twitter account shows:

Ahead of this match, Watford boss Quique Flores admitted that he is expecting Southampton to be tired following their exploits in Europe: "I have a happy experience of the competition but it was a little bit different because we were not good in the domestic league and we focused on the Europa League. It's very difficult for teams to be focused on two different competitions when they play in both those competitions in a week. For English teams it's different because they use a lot of energy in every single match. Recovery between matches is not easy. Sometimes when you have to play against a hard team, recovery is not the same."

Ronald Koeman told reporters at his pre-match press conference that he wants the side to learn from their defeat to Everton last weekend: ""Of course after the defeat against Everton we need a win. We know that. A win gives confidence to the players. Sometimes you don't want to put too much pressure on winning but the best is to learn about mistakes."

With the other results that have already taken place this weekend, Southampton sit in the bottom three coming into this match. Having shared a 2-2 draw with Newcastle United in the first match of the season, the side were thrashed 3-0 by Everton at St Mary's last time out. By contrast, Watford picked up a 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison in their opening match of the campaign, before drawing with West Brom last time out, which leaves them 14th in the table with a game in hand over most of the sides above them.

REFEREE WATCH! Andre Marriner is in charge of this match. Here he is testing the goalline technology out a little earlier:

This will be the first time that these two sides have faced each other in over three years. Their last meeting was when they were both in the Championship in 2012, with Southampton securing a 3-0 victory at Vicarage Road, having beaten the Hornets 4-0 at home earlier in the campaign.

Despite those results from their most recent meetings, Watford will be confident, particularly on home soil. The team were unbeaten in their first eight home matches in the Championship last season. By contrast, Southampton have not secured three points in their last eight matches away from St Mary's in the Premier League.

One thing which has hampered Ronald Koeman at the start of this season is his Achilles injury. The Saints manager ruptured the tendon in a training session just a couple of days before the start of the season. He returned to the touchline last week, but will have to remain in his seat for the time being, as he's got two more weeks on crutches:

Both sides will be looking towards last season's top scorers for more goals in this campaign. Troy Deeney became the first striker to record three 20-goal seasons in a row for Watford, netting 21 times in the Championship last season, but he hasn't opened his account yet this season. Graziano Pelle has been on decent form early in this season though, netting twice in the Europa League and once against Newcastle for Southampton.

With kickoff just around the corner, why not check out what the Sports Mole On The Sofa team had to say about this fixture:

This is one of three Premier League match taking place today. The first is already done, with Chelsea getting their first win with a 3-2 victory over West Brom. Manchester City are also in action shortly, kicking off against Everton at 4pm. You can follow action from that match here.

It's worth keeping in mind that while Southampton have one eye on their Europa League campaign, Watford will be in cup action themselves in just two days time, as they travel to newly-promoted Championship side Preston North End in the second round of the League Cup on Tuesday.

PREDICTION! The players should be heading out shortly, so there's just time to make a prediction. Watford will fancy their chances against a Southampton side that haven't found their form from last season yet. However, it's an attacking lineup from Southampton, with plenty of options on the bench too, so they should just have enough to clinch a narrow win, so I'm going for a 1-0 victory for the visitors.

The players make their way out ready for kickoff in front of a packed Vicarage Road. The good news is the heavy showers that we showed you in Southampton's vine at the start of our coverage appear to have dried up, and it's nice and sunny now.

KICKOFF! Southampton get the action underway.

The visitors are on the attack from the start, with Wanyama getting forward before playing a cross in towards Graziano Pelle, but the squared pass goes just behind the striker. Southampton are soon back on the attack though, forcing a free kick, but Caulker can only head it behind from the edge of the box.

Watford try to cause problems down the other end, with a long ball forward from Prodl dropping to Ikechi Anya, but the winger isn't able to control it on the turn to get the shot away. It's been a fast-paced start from both sides.

Troy Deeney tries to make an impact, battling hard out wide on the right before attempting to curl the ball in from a tight angle, but Stekelenburg is alert to the danger and claims it with ease.

Steven Davis runs towards the Watford goal, but a wayward pass hands the ball back to the hope side. Anya passes to Odion Ighalo, who pulls it back to Etienne Capoue on the turn, but the midfielder's finish is wildly mis-hit, almost going out for a throw in rather than a goal kick

Watford are really starting to pile on the pressure now as Anya and Ighalo play their way down the right. The latter tries to play the ball in for Capoue, but he goes a little early, resulting in him being flagged offside. The home side have really dominated possession for the last five minutes, forcing Southampton to get numbers back. The visitors also have an injury concern, as Cedric Soares appeared to have picked up a head injury.

CHANCE! Anya shows incredible pace as he sprints down the right and into the box, taking a touch before trying to hook the ball across to Deeney, but the striker can't quite get his out-stretched boot to it. Caulker had been on Deeney, but the defender lost the forward, leaving him in plenty of space. Had Deeney made contact, that would have been a difficult one for Maarten Stekelenburg to deal with.

From nowhere, Sadio Mane bursts forward from inside his own half, racing down the right flank before attempting to pick out Pelle with a low pass. There are three defenders between the two Southampton players, and Mane's ball beats the first two, but Nyom intercepts it before it gets to the striker.

Southampton have started to show a little more intent in the last few minutes, with Caulker and Davis working hard in the midfield, before Romeu looked for Pelle again, but the ball ended up going behind. Mane gets forward again, but is penalised for pulling Nyom's shirt.

As well as giving away the free kick, Sadio Mane appears to have picked up a knock, leaping to avoid a collision with the keeper and landing awkwardly. He gets back to his feet, but quickly drops back to the ground. It looks like he'll be ok to continue though, following some treatment from the medical team.

Mane is really struggling. He's unsteady on his feet and crumples to the floor again. He looks in a really bad way and has to go off for further treatment. If he can't shake this, Southampton will have to make an early change.

The injury to Mane has just disrupted the tempo of the match, but Watford regroup quickly and try to get the ball back in the Southampton box, but Anya is fouled on the right wing.

SUB! Mane's day is done! He heads straight down the tunnel, looking really quite pained. Shane Long comes on in his place.

CHANCE! Jose Holebas hits a potent effort on the half-volley from 25 yards out after an Anya cross is cleared. It looks like it was on target, forcing a dive from the keeper, but Deeney is in the wrong place at the wrong time, and is thumped by his teammates shot.

CHANCE! Shane Long gets the ball for the first time since coming off the bench, and makes a superb run in from the right before trying to squeeze the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, but Gomes just stretches far enough to keep it out.

BOOKING! Victor Wanyama gets the first yellow card of the after for a late challenge on Jose Jurado.

Jose Fonte is forced to put the ball out for Southampton as Deeney plays an excellent for forward to Holebas, giving away a throw in near the corner flag. Watford have certainly used all the interruptions following Mane's injury to take control of this match. However, neither keeper has really had too many to think about yet.

PENALTY APPEAL! Deeney wants a spot kick as Caulker has his arms around the striker's waist as he tries to get on the end of a Jurado ball into the box. The Watford captain looks to the referee, but Andre Marriner isn't interested. The Southampton defender definitely had his hands on Deeney, but it wasn't spotted by the officials.

CHANCE! Although Southampton will have been gutted to see Mane go off injured so early on, Shane Long has certainly brought something extra to the visitors' game going forward. He makes another break from midfield, using his stunning pace to set up Pelle, but the striker can only head wide.

CHANCE! Long is involved again as Cedric Soares gets forward to cross the ball in towards the Irishman, but his headed is deflected behind for a corner. Caulker comes forward during the set piece, but finds himself in an offside position, giving the hosts a free kick.

CHANCE! The best chance of the match so far falls to Odion Ighalo as Deeney controls a high ball forward before teeing it up for the winger, but he hurries his shot, slicing it just wide of the post for Watford. That was an excellent chance for the hosts.

Watford are finishing the half really strongly, with Anya sprinting through the middle before playing a through-ball in towards Ighalo, but it's put behind for a corner before the winger can get a foot to it.

Shane Long is unhappy as the referee awards Watford a goal kick. The forward took it into the box before Jurado put in the challenge, resulting in the ball going behind. Long insists that it was the Watford man who got the last touch, but is livid when Marriner gives it the other way.

There are two minutes of stoppage time to be played before the interval.

Jurado and Holebas try to create one last chance for the home side before the interval, but Soares puts the ball out for a throw in, which comes to nothing.

HALF TIME: Watford 0-0 Southampton

So, neither side manage to open the scoring in the first half, but both have shown plenty of intent. Southampton have looked the more comfortable in possession, but Watford have had the better of the chances.

Although Southampton have looked more comfortable on the ball, Watford have actually had slightly more time in possession, with 52% in the first half. Both sides had three shots, with two of Southampton's on target, while Watford are still to test Stekelenburg, although the keeper did come to claim a couple of dangerous-looking crosses early on.

Troy Deeney hasn't had too many chances himself so far, but has provided plenty of service for his teammates. Here's a look at last season's top scorer for Watford doing battle with Oriol Romeu.

UPDATE: It's half time in the other 4pm kickoff in the Premier League this afternoon. Manchester City are putting their 100% record on the line at Everton, but it's the home side who had the better chances in the first half, with Romelu Lukaku having a goal ruled out for offside, while also hitting the crossbar. It remains level at the interval though.

The players are starting to make their way back out ready for the second half.

SUB! Watford are making a change, with Diamanti replacing Holebas to make his debut for the club.

RESTART! The home side get the match back underway.

Watford are on the attack early in the second half, with Anya getting forward down the left flank, before watching Caulker block his pass. Diamanti picks it up and tries to make an immediate impact, but Yoshida gets it away for the visitors. Watford are certainly taking it to Southampton at the start of this second half.

Deeney gets the better of Fonte to race into the box unmarked, but Caulker makes a vital challenge, putting the ball behind for a corner, but Behrami gives away a free kick while trying to flick the ball on for the hosts.

CHANCE! Southampton get down the other end following a quick counter-attack. Long crosses it in from the right for the visitors, setting up Pelle for a header, but Gomes makes a diving save to tip it behind. Long gets a header away from the resulting corner, but it's just over the crossbar.

Shane Long continues to ask questions of the Watford back four with another excellent cross, this time from the left in towards Cedric Soares, but Gomes is quickly off his line to take it. Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill is in the crowd today, and he'll be pleased with what he's seen from Long so far.

BOOKING! Romeu goes in the book for a late challenge on Capoue, which leaves the Watford man in a crumpled heap. It really was a reckless one from the Southampton midfielder, some referees might have considered a red for that.

A lovely one-two from Nyom and Jurado resulting in the defender trying to cross the ball in from out wide, but he just loses out to Soares. Anya gets it back down the other side a couple of minutes later, but Soares is there again to boot it clear.

Watford continues to look the more likely, with Diamanti delivering the ball in with a floated high ball from the left, but Ighalo heads it wide. Deeney had been in space behind him, leaping up to meet it, but it was Ighalo who got to it first.

Deeney is still trying to make his presence felt up front, getting through the middle before being closed down by Caulker. The visitors are soon trying to make a run down the other end, but Romeu gives away a free kick while battling with Jurado. The Southampton man needs to be careful as he has already been booked.

Cathcart and Diamanti are on the charge for Watford, before a cross to the opposite side finds Jurado, who has really come alive in the last five minutes. His delivery into the box is turned behind for a corner.

CHANCE! Watford are getting ever closer as the ball comes in from the corner, with Deeney flicking the ball on to Capoue, but his attempted tap-in goes agonisingly just inches high.

Watford have a free kick, which comes to nothing. However, Wanyama is slow as Southampton try to bring the ball out from the back, allowing Deeney to snatch it back for the hosts. Fonte spares his teammate's blushes though with a fantastic last-gasp challenge.

CHANCE! Alessandro Diamanti picks the ball up around 30 yards out, and the home crowd encourages the new signing to take the shot on. He obliges, but it ends up comfortably clearing the crossbar.

Southampton have been on the defensive for much of this second half, but Soares tries to get the ball down the other end. However, he overplays the ball in towards Pelle, allowing Watford to clear it. It's a wasted opportunity for the visitors.

SUB! Southampton make their second change of the match as James Ward-Prowse replaces Steven Davis.

CHANCE! Victor Wanyama has had a bit of a mixed day so far, and gets involved as Southampton pile forward, unleashing a low strike from 20 yards out, but he doesn't get anywhere near enough power on it, leaving Gomes with an easy stop.

The visitors are just starting to look a little more dangerous than they have done for much of this second half. Soares gets himself free at the near post, collecting a rebound, but he can only head behind.

Watford continue to look for the opening goal, with Diamanti and Anya working the ball in for Ighalo, but he's unable to prevent the ball going behind for a free kick. Deeney soon has it back in the middle and runs at the Southampton goal, but Soares halts his charge.

SUB! The visitors make their final change, replacing Graziano Pelle with Jay Rodriguez.

Jurado uses his quick footwork to get the better of Targett again, allowing him to curl the ball in towards Anya, but he can't get his header away cleanly, failing to test Stekelenburg. Despite Watford having the majority of the chances in the second half, the Southampton goalkeeper hasn't had too much to do.

CHANCE! Southampton head back down the other end, with Shane Long trying his luck from 25 yards out, but it's an easy save to Gomes. Like Stekelenburg, the Watford keeper hasn't been kept too busy, but he has made some solid stops this afternoon.

Romeu slips the ball forward for Ward-Prowse as Southampton press for a late winner, but Behrami is there to make sure the midfielder doesn't take it into the box. Anya gets away down the other end, attempting to flick it on for Deeney, but Fonte is there to frustrate the striker again. Fonte has done an excellent job keeping the Watford skipper quiet.

SUB! Watford make just their second change of the day, bringing on Ben Watson for Valon Behrami.

Diamanti is brought down by Soares out wide, giving the hosts a free kick in a decent position. The new signing curls the ball in himself, and the initial delivery is cleared by Ward-Prowse. Watson was waiting just outside the box, and rushes in to thump the ball towards the Southampton goal on the rebound, but his shot was always rising.

Both sides are desperate for the late winner, as Targett gets forward to provide a ball in for Southampton, only for Prodl to head it clear. Diamanti and Capoue take it down the other end, but Cedric Soares wins it back for the visitors. It's been end-to-end stuff in the final few minutes, and there are just two minutes of stoppage time to be played.

FULL TIME: Watford 0-0 Southampton

So, neither side manage to break the deadlock, giving Watford a third straight draw, and leaving Southampton still pursuing their first win in the league. It wasn't the most thrilling match of the season, but both sides worked hard and defending well to earn the point.
