Jamie Vardy had the half's first chance after he connected with Marc Albrighton's delivery, as the latter put the ball into the centre of the Saints area only for the England international to blaze his shot over.

Southampton replied with a chance of their own minutes later, as James Ward-Prowse's set piece was met by defender Van Dijk, who headed past Kasper Schmeichel but not Danny Drinkwater on the line.

However, the visitors could not keep out Southampton from a corner 10 minutes later, as Fonte rose highest to head in and make it 1-0 for Ronald Koeman's side.

The lead was doubled shortly before the end of the half, as Fonte's defensive partner got himself on the scoresheet with a scrappy goalmouth scramble ending up in the back of the net, Van Dijk getting the last touch.
