Team News: Gareth Southgate makes two England changes

Southgate makes two England changes

Interim boss Gareth Southgate has made two changes to England's starting lineup for this evening's World Cup 2018 qualification clash with Slovenia in Ljubljana.

Tottenham Hotspur duo Danny Rose and Eric Dier come into the side from the 2-0 win over Malta, meaning only a place on the bench for skipper Wayne Rooney - as confirmed by Southgate on Monday evening.

Injured full-back Ryan Bertrand is the other player to drop out from that last outing, with Southgate seemingly sticking with the 4-2-3-1 formation which will be spearheaded by Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge.

In defence, Gary Cahill earns his 50th cap for the Three Lions, while it will also be a special occasion for Jordan Henderson as he skippers his nation for the first time in Rooney's absence.

Home manager Srecko Katanec can call upon key defensive midfielder Rene Krhin following his impressive display against Slovakia three days ago, and there is also a place further forward for Chievo playmaker Valter Birsa in an unchanged XI.

Slovenia: Oblak, Samardzic, Cesar, Krhin, Ilicic, Kurtic, Birsa, Jokic, Bezjak, Verbic, Struna Subs: Crnic, Novakovic, Jovic, Omladic, Kronaveter, Koprivec, Trajkovski, Belec, Skubic, Pihler, Mevlja, Zajc

England: Hart, Walker, Stones, Cahill, Rose, Henderson, Dier, Walcott, Alli, Lingard, Sturridge Subs: Rooney, Forster, Pickford, Gibbs, Antonio, Smalling, Keane, Vardy, Rashford, Townsend, Oxlade-Chamberlain
