Late Atdhe Nuhiu penalty downs 10-man Middlesbrough

Sheffield Wednesday secure a home win against Middlesbrough with a late penalty from Atdhe Nuhiu.

A second-half penalty from Atdhe Nuhiu has seen Sheffield Wednesday beat 10-man Middlesbrough in the Championship this afternoon.

The home side had the majority of possession in the first 10 minutes, but a combination of poor decision-making and good defending by Boro denied them a clear-cut chance.

It was the visitors who had the first effort of the afternoon, as Kei Kamara forced Chris Kirkland to save. Jacob Butterfield then hit a speculative shot from the edge of the box that hit both posts before bouncing into Kirkland's arms.

The Owls continued to dominate the ball without creating much in the final third.

However, Jacques Maghoma did fire high over the bar and Leon Best stabbed wide from Chris Maguire's assist with half time approaching.

Both sides made a visible attempt to push more men forward at the start of the second period, but they were still unable to find the net.

Glenn Loovens missed the target and Sam Hutchinson's shot from 25 yards forced Tomas Mejias to tip over the bar.

Boro were equally wasteful in front of goal, with both Danny Graham and Kei Kamara unable to beat Kirkland.

However, with time running out, Dean Whitehead was sent off and Wednesday were awarded a penalty. Nuhui stepped up and won the game for the hosts.
