Sheffield Wednesday in striker search

Sheffield Wednesday look to strengthen in attack in the January transfer window.

Steven Fletcher is in great form for Sheffield Wednesday right now, having scored seven goals in his last six outings. The club and its players are coping well with top-flight football, with many pundits pleasantly surprised. Nowadays, it would be safe to say that fans in the UK who are betting online would not hesitate to have Steven on the scoresheet, with everyone expecting the player to continue his excellent form against Bristol City next time out. However, it seems that the Owls and manager Garry Monk still want to strengthen in attack.

Rhian Brewster is a name which has cropped up recently, and he fits the bill in terms of what Wednesday are undoubtedly looking for ahead of the window. The 19-year-old can play through the middle as well as out wide and will add energy and pace to a forward line that at times seems to need more mobility. The Liverpool youngster is available for loan, but he must go somewhere he's guaranteed to play regularly, and it looks like Swansea could lead the race as a result.

Lyle Taylor, 29, is another player linked with making a switch to Hillsborough, with Sheffield being a city he knows well after turning out for arch-rivals Sheffield United on 25 occasions previously. With his contract set to expire in the summer, a cut-price deal for Taylor could be on the cards. His record at Charlton speaks for itself, with 30 goals and 14 assists in 54 games. He started this season in the Championship on fire, scoring five times in the first six games, but then missed 13 games through injury.

The latest name tipped to be a target of Garry Monk's is a surprising one, with Bristol Rovers striker Jonson Clarke-Harris said to be on Wednesday's wishlist. The Leicester-born forward played in the Championship when he was at Rotherham United but left the Millers for Coventry before joining his current side nearly a year ago. He's been in fantastic form this season, bagging 10 goals in 16 outings in all competitions, and this has put the Owls and other Championship outfits on high alert.

There are options aplenty for Wednesday and Garry Monk, as they look to continue cementing their position as a top-six side in the Championship this season. However, they could have second thoughts, as eight-million-pound man Jordan Rhodes bagged an impressive 37-minute first-half hat-trick against Nottingham Forest last time out. Rhodes, 29, hasn't hit the heights expected since joining Wednesday in 2017, but he rolled back the years in front of goal at the City Ground.

It's likely that an attacking arrival, even on loan, will spell the end of the road for at least one of the strikers at Hillsborough. Sam Winnall and Fernando Forestieri are the likely candidates to leave the club, especially as both are out of contract this summer. Winnall hasn't been able to nail down a place in the matchday squad at times, and Forestieri has struggled to force his way into Garry Monk's thinking. So, it could be a case of one in, one out, as Wednesday look to balance the books.
