West Ham United edge Schalke 04 in penalty shootout

West Ham United beat Schalke 04 7-6 on penalties in their Schalke Cup friendly match on Saturday, following a goalless draw in the initial 90 minutes.

West Ham United beat Schalke 04 7-6 on penalties after a 0-0 draw in normal time of their Schalke Cup clash on Saturday afternoon.

Maxim Choupo-Moting was unfortunate with an effort, after he dribbled past James Collins before hitting the woodwork with a fierce drive.

Marvin Freidrich then saw his shot saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen at the end of the first half as the German side stepped up the pressure.

Friedrich came even closer in the second half when he rose highest from a set piece to head against the crossbar.

However, with neither side able to break the deadlock, the match went to penalties, with the Hammers eventually edging out the Bundesliga outfit thanks to Jaaskelainen's save from Axel Borgmann.
