The Royal Blues came out of the blocks the quicker of the two sides, with Benedikt Howedes and Julian Draxler testing the visitors' defence in the opening five minutes.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar then saw his shot from outside the Furth penalty box blocked, before Wolfgang Hesl kept out Roman Neustadter's header from close range.

Schalke continued to dominate proceedings at the Veltins Arena as the first half progressed, Jermaine Jones, Michel Bastos and Huntelaar all trying their luck but in vain.

Bastos broke the deadlock for the home side just two minutes into the second half when he fired home from distance.

It was the Brazilian winger's first goal for Schalke on his debut for the club, but was cancelled out just minutes later.

Felix Klaus scored for Furth in the 52nd minute with a shot from long range after being set up by Nikola Djurdjic.

Djurdjic himself scored the winner for the visitors in the second minute of injury time with a header from close range.
