Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni urges his side to believe that they can win against Russia on Tuesday.

Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni has said that his side must believe that a win against Russia is possible after their 0-0 draw with Slovakia last night.

Russia are now top of Group B, with Ireland having missed the chance to remain level on points ahead of their showdown in Moscow next week.

However, Trapattoni remains confident that his side can still beat the group leaders.

"We must think it is possible to win in Russia - why not? It is important to believe this," he said.

"Today, we were first in the table because we had scored more goals than Russia, 11 against nine, and now they have 10.

"Yes, they have 16 points, but it is important now to play with the same application and order and with this attitude and mentality. Our defence was very, very strong tonight and we didn't concede a goal."

Ireland and Slovakia are currently both on 14 points, with Trapattoni's side ahead on goal difference.
