Raphael Varane insists that Real Madrid 'can never be written off', despite his side lagging 15 points behind leaders Barcelona following their fifth loss of the season.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has urged his teammates to keep fighting, despite suffering another La Liga title blow on Tuesday night.

The reigning champions saw their five-game winning run come to a halt at Espanyol, going down 1-0 in Catalonia to a late Gerard Moreno strike.

A fifth league defeat of the season for Madrid leaves them 15 points adrift of pacesetters Barcelona, having played a game more than their rivals, but Varane is unwilling to wave the white flag just yet.

"We performed better in the first half than we did in the second," he told reporters after the match. "We always have to give our best when we pull this shirt on.

"We can't give up on La Liga; we have to show the same drive. We're not looking at the points, we have to focus on the games and try to win them because that's what this badge demands of us. You can never write us off.

"We always want to win and this won't have any effect on the PSG game. Regardless of whether Neymar plays or not, it'll be tough because they'll come out all guns blazing. We're ready for it and will continue with our preparations."

Los Blancos welcome Getafe to the Bernabeu on Saturday evening for their next outing, before then turning attention to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
