Preview: Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid

Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid

One of the biggest matches in European football will take centre stage on Saturday evening when fierce rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid meet at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Atletico's triumph in La Liga last season will live long in the memory for many football fans, but it was Real who ended the campaign on a high by beating their neighbours in the Champions League final.

These two sides have already met twice this season, with Atletico picking up more silverware thanks to a 2-1 aggregate success in the Spanish Super Cup, but this is the clash that both sets of supporters have been waiting for since the fixtures were released.

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly ready to return to action for the European champions after fighting off a number of minor injuries to prove his fitness to Carlo Ancelotti.

Doubts remain over the condition of Dani Carvajal, who missed Spain's win over Macedonia earlier this week due to a hamstring problem, and Alvaro Arbeloa could step in to fill the gap in defence.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone continues his touchline ban on Saturday, and he could be forced to select a squad without Cristian Rodriguez, who picked up a calf injury while on international duty with Uruguay.
