Real Madrid have missed the chance to go top of the La Liga table after losing 1-0 to Alaves in Saturday's fixture at Mendizorrotza.

Julen Lopetegui watched on as his side squandered several opportunities during the opening stages of the game, but Real failed to trouble their hosts after the break.

Alaves would have been satisfied with a point but in the fifth minute of added-on time, Manu Garcia netted from close range to move his side level on points with Real.

Find out how all of the action unfolded in Spain courtesy of Sports Mole's minute-by-minute updates below.

Hello and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of the match in La Liga between Alaves and Real Madrid. Few people would have predicted that Real would have dropped seven points at this stage of the season, but barely anyone would have thought that Alaves will be sitting in sixth spot. This game promises to be interesting!

ALAVES XI: Pacheco; Navarro, Laguarida, Maripan, Duarte; Brasanac, Pina, Wakaso; Ibai, Jony, Calleri

REAL MADRID XI Courtois; Odriozola, Ramos, Varane, Nacho; Casemiro, Kroos, Modric; Ceballos, Bale, Benzema

The main news regarding the two teams is the return of Gareth Bale. The Welshman missed the Champions League trip to CSKA Moscow in midweek, but the attacker returns to take his place alongside Karim Benzema in attack. Former West Ham United striker Jonathan Calleri leads the line for Alaves.

The two teams are beginning to make their way at Mendizorrotza. This ground may hold less than 20,000 but it will sound like double that throughout this fixture!

A reminder that Real can move top of the table with a positive result tonight. They will want all three points with Barcelona facing Valencia tomorrow evening.

KICKOFF:  Real get us underway!

It has been a confident start from Real who are already spraying the ball about effortlessly. No shots on goal yet, but the visitors look bright.

SHOT!  Benzema gets the first shot on goal after receiving a pass on the edge of the area, but the Frenchman fires too close to Pacheco.

SHOT!  It's all Real. Ceballos receives the ball on the left-hand side of the penalty area before seeing a low shot tipped wide of the post.

Nacho has also sent a glancing header just wide of the far post. Alaves are starting to do more going forward, but not enough to halt Real's dominance.

CHANCE!  Real go close again. A cross from the right finds Benzema at the back post, but the forward sees his header cleared off the line.

The visitors are back looking to keep hold of the ball on the halfway line but it is still showing Alaves the size of their task this evening. They have barely had a touch of the ball in the Real half.

Alaves are doing a better job of keeping Real away from their goal, but Lopetegui will be delighted with this start.

Real win a free kick on the left and Kroos delivers the ball into the box. However, it is comfortably headed clear by an Alaves defender.

Alaves are trying to get things going but the trio of Casemiro, Kroos and Modric are crowding them out whenever they try to go further forward.

The same pattern continues with Alaves seeing more of the ball and although they are now getting near to a chance on goal, it is telling Real that they refuse to be overawed.

The home crowd were quiet after the opening stages but they have certainly warmed into this now. They are starting to believe that this won't be one-way traffic.

We are really being starved of goalmouth action now. Real could have scored four during the first 10 minutes but since then, they have offered very little.

Half a chance for Alaves as Wakaso gets down the left-hand side of the penalty area, but his shot is weak and never troubling Courtois.

Much better from Alaves as a cross from the left narrowly misses Gomez by the penalty spot, before a pass back into the area is headed cleared by Ramos.

That has led to Real waking up and a free kick is won on the edge of the area. Bale takes responsibility, but sends a poor effort into the wall.

You can certainly see why Alaves are where they are in the league table. They do a lot of things well, if not great. It's tough for them to find a balance regarding what to do in this game.

Not a lot to report over the past couple of minutes. The tempo of this game has certainly slowed.

Alaves win a free kick in a threatening position on the left, and it leads to a corner being won with a Real defender having to glance the ball behind.

Nothing comes from the set piece. Alaves decided to play it short but then end up failing to get the ball into the box. It's a waste.

Real are doing their best to pose a bigger threat going forward but they seem to be waiting for Bale to do something out of the ordinary.

Just the five minutes to go until half time and Alaves will definitely be the most pleased out of the two clubs. They haven't faced much danger at all over the last half-hour, and continue to cause issues for the visitors on the break.

Bale plays an excellent ball over to Benzema on the left and it gives the Frenchman a chance to run at the full-back. However, a second defender soon arrives to see off the danger posed by the forward.

HALF TIME:  Alaves 0-0 Real Madrid

The half-time whistle goes with both teams still on level terms. Real started positively and could have gone ahead numerous times in the opening 15 minutes but since then, Alaves have been excellent and have dealt with everything which has been thrown at them.

Real's best chances have come from crosses, with Nacho glancing a header wide of the far post and Benzema seeing an effort cleared off the line. Bale has been a threat but the Welshman is yet to do anything significant in the final third.

Alaves have offered very little in the way of goalscoring chances, but the threat is there. Real haven't really been troubled, but it may only take one chance for Calleri to change the course of this match.

KICKOFF:  We are back underway. Mariano has replaced Benzema for Real, which is an interesting one.

It has been a quiet start to the second half with both sides getting into the respective final thirds before being dispossessed.

Mariano almost makes an instant impact, receiving the ball on the side of the area before twisting and turning the defender inside out. However, he tries to do it one time too many and is tackled.

Alaves have started to force Real to have to defend again, with only a last-ditch tackle preventing Ibai from taking a shot on goal from 12 yards out.

YELLOW CARD!  Wakaso goes into the book for a late, crude challenge on Casemiro in the centre of the pitch.

Real have held onto possession for the past couple of minutes without really looking like getting in behind the defence. Alaves are still happy to work on the break.

SHOT!  Duarte decides to break up the pattern of play by trying his luck from all of 35 yards, and Courtois has to remain alert to parry the ball away from goal.

We go through the hour mark and we still remain goalless. There are no signs of Alaves being prepared to settle for what they have, but that won't be the case with Real as we move closer to full time.

SUBSTITUTION! Lopetegui makes a second switch with Asensio replacing Casemiro.

It's worth remembering that Real will move top of the table with a point, but this wouldn't be the way in which they would want to overtake Barcelona. These are the kind of matches which they need to be winning.

Odriozola is starting to make a bigger effort to get down the right to support the front three and he is troubling Duarte. He cannot afford to get caught out going the other way though.

SUBSTITUTION! Alaves make a change with Sobrino being introduced into the action.

As we enter the final quarter, Alaves' front three press the Real defence in an attempt to win the ball. They still won't settle for a point. Real need something special here because they just aren't creating anything clear-cut.

Mariano challenges Pacheco for a high ball after seemingly beating the offside trap but after a collision between the pair, the flag goes up. It's poor from the assistant with Mariano always going to be active. Pacheco is currently receiving treatment.

SUBSTITUTION! Alaves make another change with Wakaso being replaced by Garcia.

Asensio tries his luck from distance but his weak shot is blocked. Kroos wants to get a shot away but he is crowded out. This is getting no easier for Real.

CHANCE!  Alaves almost take the lead! Jony got in behind Odriozola down the flank and left the Real defence struggling to get back, but the winger fired his shot from 14 yards narrowly wide of the far post!

SUBSTITUTION! Bale has gone off with what appears to be an injury, with Vinicius Junior coming on in his place.

It would be harsh on Alaves if they conceded from here. Each and every player has put in a big shift. Real continue to probe, though.

Jony is starting to have plenty of joy down the left but he is greedy on this occasion, blazing a shot well over the crossbar from an acute angle.

Just the four minutes to go and still very little danger is coming the way of Alaves. They may be starting to think about the point now.

SUBSTITUTION! A final change for Alaves sees Aguirregabiria come on for Maripan.

Alaves have the ball having won a free kick near the halfway line. Lopetegui is cutting a frustrated figure on the touchline.

There will be five minutes of added-on time.

Ramos has gone up to try to add an extra threat but the defender only gets in the way of Mariano in the penalty area. That could be that.

Alaves win a last-minute corner. This would be as dramatic as it gets...

GOAL!  Alaves 1-0 Real Madrid (Manu Garcia)

Unbelievable!!! Alaves win it with virtually the last touch of the game. A corner finds Sobrino at the back post and after his header goes towards the far corner, Garcia gets the decisive touch at the back post!

FULL TIME:  Alaves 1-0 Real Madrid

The full-time whistle goes in Spain and Alaves have registered one of the greatest wins in their history! We appeared on course for a share of the spoils but Garcia converted in the fifth minute of added-on time to condemn Real to another defeat. These two clubs are now level on points!

That will be all from Sports Mole for this game. Thank you for joining us this evening and we hope to see you again soon.
