Jaap Stam planning January spending

Reading manager Jaap Stam outlines plans to make the most of the January transfer window as he pushes for promotion to the Premier League.

Reading manager Jaap Stam has revealed that he is planning to make the most of the January transfer window as he makes a push for promotion in the second half of the season.

The Royals are currently third in the Championship and just five points off the automatic promotion places, having gone on a run of five back-to-back wins in October and November.

Stam brought in 11 new players following his appointment in June, including Tyler Blackett, Roy Beerens and Liam Moore, but thinks that he will require a bigger squad to remain competitive in the run-in.

"If you look at the other teams in the league and want to stay up there and want to go for that top six spot then I think it would good to bring in some extra quality in the squad," he told the Reading Post.

"Not because we need to bring in better players because we've already got good players, but you want to make the squad as big as you can because you want to make changes sometimes. And it would be nice to surprise the opposition and bring in different players in different positions.

"You want to have as much quality as you can and you're looking at different types of players in the squad."

Earlier this week Reading were linked with a move for Brentford frontman Scott Hogan.
