Rangers too good for Peterhead

Rangers too good for Peterhead

Rangers have opened their Scottish League Cup campaign with a 3-0 victory over Peterhead at Ibrox this afternoon.

Lee Wallace threatened early on for the hosts, but his low effort from inside the box was saved by Graeme Smith.

Smith was called into action again moments later to save an attempt from Dean Shiels, before the keeper held onto a curling strike from James Tavernier.

Nicky Law then flashed a header just wide and Wallace saw a shot saved, as the Gers continued to press forward in search of an opener.

The hosts finally made their pressure pay in the 41st minute, as Barrie McKay's low cross into the box deflected kindly into the path of David Templeton, who fired in from close range.

Rangers almost doubled their lead at the start of the second half, but Martyn Waghorn saw his strike blocked on the line.

The forward then volleyed an attempt over the bar, before McKay curled a shot narrowly wide of the target.

In the 76th minute the hosts were able to extend their lead, as Tavernier burst into the box and played a low ball towards the back post that was turned in by Kenny Miller.

Tavernier then got his name on the scoresheet six minutes later with a low finish past Smith to wrap up a comfortable win for the Gers.
