Former Rangers manager Walter Smith could reportedly be appointed as the club's new chairman.

The 65-year-old is thought to have been preferred by board members to replace current chief Malcolm Murray at the club.

It is believed that Smith was backed by the club's officials during a board meeting last night, according to BBC Sport.

The board are thought to have been attempting to remove Murray for a number of weeks.
