Smith steps down as Rangers chairman

Walter Smith has resigned as Rangers chairman with immediate effect, the club have announced.

It is believed that the former manager, 65, who has only been in the non-executive position since May, leaves the club because of infighting at Ibrox.

Reports emerged yesterday that Smith was considering stepping down and the club confirmed the news this afternoon in a short statement.

According to BBC Sport, Smith is expected to release a statement outlining his reasons for quitting.
