Neil McCann wants Walter Smith return at Rangers

Neil McCann urges former club Rangers to hand ex-manager Walter Smith a role at Ibrox Stadium.

Former Rangers winger Neil McCann has urged the club to bring back ex-manager Walter Smith in some capacity.

Kenny McDowall is currently in charge of the team at Ibrox Stadium, though the 51-year-old is expected to leave at the end of the season.

The Gers sit in third place in the Scottish Championship table, 22 points behind runaway leaders Hearts.

New chairman Dave King has hinted at a managerial change sooner rather than later at the club, and McCann believes that Smith should be part of their plans going forward.

"The players have struggled with confidence," he told Sky Sports News. "Ally McCoist has gone and Kenny McDowall doesn't look comfortable, he doesn't look like he wants to be there. A return for Walter Smith has been spoken about and personally I would like to see Walter going in there.

"I don't think Kenny would be too bothered about seeing Walter come back. Obviously he had a great relationship with Walter and I think he said himself he would like to see Ally McCoist back in. Whether that would happen I don't know."

Rangers slipped further behind Hearts in the standings last night with a 1-1 draw at home to Cowdenbeath.
