Alex McCarthy: 'I was right to snub Liverpool'

Alex McCarthy says that his decision to snub Liverpool for QPR will be vindicated if his international prospects improve.

Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Alex McCarthy believes that time will prove that he was right to snub a move to Liverpool.

The 24-year-old joined the London club from Reading last Friday, with reports claiming that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers showed a late interest in him.

However, McCarthy, who was called up to an England squad in 2013 but remains uncapped, says that he has a better shot at fulfilling his international ambitions at Loftus Road.

"At this moment in time, I think I made the right decision," he told Sky Sports News. "Obviously Liverpool historically are a massive club, but I wanted to go with QPR. I feel like I'm going to play more here and that was the reason.

"The first thing is to get back playing again and put myself in the position to get put forward for England.

"I want to be at the top for as many years as can, like Rob Green. He's had an unbelievable career and is still playing now. He's in great shape. I want to follow in those footsteps."

McCarthy made 34 Championship appearances for Reading last season as the Royals finished seventh, one point adrift of the playoff places.
