QPR round-up: So, Hughes was given his marching orders this morning and the QPR board have swiftly got to work on finding a replacement. Reports have claimed that Harry Redknapp is in talks with the club and is the only contender being considered by the Premier League outfit. While the former Tottenham Hotspur boss is not expected to sign up in time to take charge of QPR's match against Manchester United tomorrow, an announcement regarding the 65-year-old is expected on Monday.

You also have to wonder what will happen to Joey Barton. The midfielder is on a season-long loan at Marseille and he has insisted that he would be happy to stay in France. While Hughes was clearly keen on offloading the controversial player, will Redknapp want him back?

There will be a lot of pressure on Redknapp to get QPR firing as soon as he walks through the door. The squad is full of Premier League-worthy players but something is clearly not working. Despite some good performances, the R's are struggling to find the net and prevent from conceding, so Redknapp will have to sort that out as soon as possible.

Redknapp's ability to transform Tottenham from a relegation-fighting side to Champions League contenders is believed to be one of the main reasons that have swayed the QPR board to poach the 65-year-old.

Reports have also claimed that the club have been deliberating over Hughes's position over the last fortnight.

Redknapp update: It is believed that the QPR board are willing to pull out all of the stops to get Redknapp to Loftus Road and it is understood that an announcement regarding Redknapp's appointment will be made on Monday, according to Sky Sports News.

Fernandes's business partner, who is believed to have told Hughes that he no longer has a job at QPR, has left the training ground and was not prepared to speak to any reporters as he headed to Manchester for tomorrow's game.

Despite Hughes's sacking, the club is running as normal and the players are expected to board the team coach to travel to Manchester ahead of their match against United tomorrow.

Hughes first stepped into club management at Blackburn Rovers, where he took charge of the team for four years. He later moved to the helm of Manchester City for a year, which was followed by a season-stint at Fulham. Hughes then made his way to QPR, where he spent just 10 months.

Let's have a little look back at Hughes's managerial career. The former Manchester United forward plunged into management in 1999 at the Wales national team, where he spent five years with the side.

We all know that a managerial shift can happen at any moment though, and with Nigel Adkins favourite to next face the axe, Hughes may want to consider a move down to the coast.

So what's next for Hughes? The 49-year-old has a wealth of experience in the Premier League and he may want to remain in the top flight of English football. However, vacancies are few and far between at the moment.

Sky Sports News are claiming that, as mentioned earlier, Redknapp is the only candidate for the board and they are not in talks with any other manager.

Unlike Rafael Benitez at Chelsea, Redknapp is likely to be welcomed by the QPR fans. One sign at the weekend from the crowd read, 'Come and save us, Harry'.

Again, I should say that this account is not verified, but defender Dan Shittu, who left QPR this year, tweeted "Karma!" shortly after the news broke.

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has been asked whether Hughes's sacking was fair: "It's difficult, I think the new TV contract thats coming in, the extra funds for next year, are putting extra pressure on boards and they're reacting. You can't afford not to be in the Premier League this year and Mark might not be the only one."

Right, conflicting reports here! Sky Sports News are reporting that Redknapp is in talks with QPR over the job and that a deal is close to being agreed.

Redknapp update: According to BBC Sport, Redknapp has been coy about the QPR vacancy saying, "we'll have to wait and see." The 65-year-old is also believed to have confirmed that he has had no personal contact from the club.

Apparently, and I say apparently because the Twitter account isn't verified, but former QPR striker Rowan Vine has given his take on who should take over at Loftus Road: "I think @Joey7Barton should get the job...he was doing ok when warnock was his assistant last time..."

Reports have claimed that the board at Loftus Road are only interested in appointing Redknapp. I wonder if they have a plan B!

There were reports that Redknapp was seriously considering an offer to coach the Ukraine national side and that looked likely to happen but the QPR role could be more suited to the former Portsmouth coach.

It wasn't to be so let's take a look at Redknapp's situation. The 65-year-old, who was sacked by Spurs in the summer, has admitted over the last few months that he has turned down a number of management offers.

Fernandes has been highly supportive of Hughes over the last few months and he once said: "I have complete faith in Mark Hughes and we have a great squad, we just need to hold out for that stability and I'm sure things are going to go right."

Chairman Fernandes's tweet following the defeat to Southampton: "I feel gutted. I have put my heart and soul into this with my other shareholders. And done all we can to give support to players and management. I can only apologise to the QPR fans. They deserve better." A sign of things to come perhaps?

Sky Sports News are reporting that Redknapp has agreed a deal with QPR to take over at Loftus Road and it will only be a matter of time before he is announced as Hughes's successor.

QPR are six points away from safety and they will be in desperate need to improve their position by the end of the hectic festive schedule. So, it's not exactly a light task for the new boss.

If an appointment is made by Monday, the new boss will have to prepare his side for a trip to Sunderland on Tuesday and a home clash against Aston Villa four days later.

So, whoever takes the job, what will they be up against?

From the sounds of it, most QPR fans are happy to see Redknapp take the job. Some have expressed an ambitious move for Pep Guardiola but I think we can all agree that that is unlikely to happen. While there has been sympathy for Hughes, a number of fans believe that it was right for him to leave, which is a far cry from Wednesday's dismissal of Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo.

While Redknapp is the overwhelming favourite to nab the vacancy, we've compiled all of the potential contenders for the position here.

CEO Beard earlier this week told Sky Sports News: "We're working hard, that's the main thing. We're working really hard and it's important that we turn it around for the fans."

While developments seem to be quiet at the moment, why don't we have a look at who's likely to face the chop in the Premier League. Southampton's Nigel Adkins is the bookies' favourite to go, with Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill the second favourite and interestingly, Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is the third likeliest to be axed.

If you remember, the board of directors spent a two-hour meeting discussing the future of Hughes following the club's defeat to Southampton but the manager remained in charge. It makes you wonder what has happened in these last four days to make them change their minds.

Whoever comes in won't be able to take charge of tomorrow's match against Man United so Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki will be in the dugout at Old Trafford.

Interestingly, the decision to sack Hughes comes just days after it looked certain that Redknapp would be taking the Ukraine job. QPR acting fast to get their man perhaps?

Former England international Gary Lineker tweeted: "Mark Hughes has been sacked as manager of QPR. He's a good friend and I wish him well."

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes has constantly been in public support of Hughes throughout the struggles of this season and he tweeted following the R's 3-1 defeat to Southampton, who are also in the bottom three of the table, that "for the millionth time" Hughes would not be sacked.

According to BBC Sport, the appointment of Redknapp is a "formality".

Former winger Richard Langley has had his say on BBC Radio 5 Live: "The frustration has been brewing and the main thing is they've got such a talented squad at the moment and the results haven't been coming so you can understand the frustrations at the club. They haven't been playing as a team."

One of the major criticisms of the club has been the amount of new players, one of which being Real Madrid playmaker Esteban Granero, brought into the club in the summer transfer window. The money spent and the number of new additions have failed to help QPR push up the table.
