Preview: Feyenoord vs. PSV Eindhoven - prediction, team news, lineups

Feyenoord vs. PSV - prediction, team news, lineups

PSV Eindhoven head into their Eredivisie fixture at Feyenoord realistically requiring all three points if they are to remain active in the title race.

At a time when the visitors sit four points adrift of leaders Ajax, Europa Conference League finalists Feyenoord are in third position in the standings.

Match preview

Having taken 28 points from a possible 30, PSV have realistically done everything possible to remain in close proximity to an Ajax side which has not always fired on all cylinders this season.

Nevertheless, the gap to their rivals remains at four points, leaving Roger Schmidt and his team to focus on their own performances and hope for the best.

PSV have also not performed at their highest level of late, following two relatively narrow victories with a thrilling 4-2 triumph at home to Willem II last weekend.

As has become a trend this campaign, the goals were shared around the team, Cody Gakpo and Eran Zahavi both taking their respective tallies for the season into double figures.

Although conceding six times in four fixtures will concern Schmidt, only victories matter at this stage with Ajax possessing a far superior goal difference.

Feyenoord head into this fixture trailing their next opponents by seven points with three games remaining, a scenario which realistically leaves them looking at third position.

Although a Champions League berth would have been welcomed, the priorities of this squad have now changed with a place in the Europa Conference League final being earned through a goalless draw at Marseille on Thursday night.

Having claimed a 3-2 win in last week's first leg, Arne Slot's side did what was required to set up a showdown with Roma on May 25, providing the club with a chance to lift their first European trophy in 20 years.

Slot will want to enter that fixture in the best form possible, the aim being to extend a domestic winning streak which currently stands at four matches with 11 goals being netted in the process.

Team News

Having named the same team for three matches in succession, Feyenoord boss Slot will give consideration to introducing a couple of fresh faces for this contest.

Bryan Linssen and Alireza Jahanbakhsh appear most likely to earn recalls, the pair potentially taking the spots of Cyriel Dessers and Reiss Nelson.

Marcus Pedersen may also be in line for an outing at right-back, with Lutsharel Geertruida moving inside or dropping down to the substitutes' bench.

With Carlos Vinicius having been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a thigh injury, Bruma could be brought into the PSV XI.

Phillipp Mwene, Ryan Thomas and Mario Gotze will also come into consideration if they have shaken off the issues which kept them out last weekend.

Feyenoord possible starting lineup:

Marciano; Geertruida, Trauner, Senesi, Malacia; Aursnes, Kokcu; Jahanbakhsh, Til, Sinisterra; Linssen

PSV Eindhoven possible starting lineup:

Mvogo; Junior, Teze, Gutierrez, Max; Veerman, Sangare; Doan, Gakpo, Bruma; Zahavi

We say: Feyenoord 1-2 PSV Eindhoven

Given the emotion of Thursday night, Feyenoord will likely field a much-changed lineup despite their desire to stay in the Champions League hunt. That will only play into the favour of PSV, who we feel should have enough quality to claim a hard-fought triumph.
