Cristiano Ronaldo critical of Iceland mentality

Ronaldo critical of Iceland mentality

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed that Iceland have a "small mentality" after they marked their European Championship debut by earning a 1-1 draw in Saint-Etienne.

Birkir Bjarnason's second-half strike cancelled out Nani's opener and although Portugal pushed for a winning goal during the closing stages, they were frustrated by a resolute Iceland backline.

After the game, Ronaldo did not shake hands with any of the Iceland players and insisted that Tuesday's opponents would not progress far in the competition.

The 31-year-old is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "I thought they'd won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end.

"It was unbelievable. We tried hard to win the game and Iceland didn't try anything. This, in my opinion, shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition."

Both teams are next in action on Saturday, with Iceland playing group leaders Hungary before Portugal face Austria.
