Portsmouth 1-5 Burnley

Portsmouth fall to a 5-1 home defeat at the hands of Burnley to add further misery to their season.

Struggling Portsmouth fell to a 5-1 home defeat at the hands of Burnley in the Championship this afternoon.

The home side made the brighter start to the match, with Tal Ben Haim testing Burnley's Lee Grant inside the first 15 minutes.

However, it was the team in claret and blue who took the lead against the run of play courtesy of Kieran Trippier's 25-yard strike.

Pompey were level just minutes later, however, as David Norris beat Grant after being found inside the six-yard box by Luke Varney.

Neither side could add to their tally in the remainder of the first half, but just two minutes into the second the visitors took the lead when Danny Ings found himself unmarked in the box, free to nod to ball past Jamie Ashdown.

Burnley got their third with 15 minutes left, this time Charlie Austin finding a way past Ashdown to all but kill Portsmouth's hopes of getting something out of the game.

Instead of fighting back, the hosts capitulated and conceded two goals in the closing minutes, both coming from Austin to complete his hattrick.

The result means that Portsmouth remain 23rd in the table, now five points from safety, while Burnley also don't move, staying in 16th place.
