Sports Mole assesses Portsmouth's progress halfway through the season.

With the continued financial worries still plaguing Portsmouth off the pitch, fans of the club were hoping for a season of stability on it.

However, owners CSI went into administration and the club lost manager Steve Cotterill as he left for Nottingham Forest, before replacing him with Michael Appleton.

Here is Sports Mole's assessment of how the new manager has fared so far this season.

August

Portsmouth kicked off the season by earning a point in a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough, thanks to a late goal from striker Luke Varney.

The South coast-side were dumped out of the Carling Cup by Barnet in the first round and then went on to lose 1-0 to Brighton in the league. Pompey recovered with a three-match unbeaten run to end the month.

September

September began with a thrilling 4-3 defeat to West Ham United before picking up their second win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Blackpool at Fratton Park.

The month ended with a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Portsmouth, courtesy of a last-minute own goal from Erik Huseklepp.

October

Pompey lost their manager Steve Cotterill as he agreed to become Nottingham Forest's new boss. Results did improve, though, with wins over Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers.

A 3-1 loss to Derby County ended the month with the club still searching for a new manager.

November

A 0-0 draw away at Crystal Palace came before an impressive 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, managed by ex-Pompey boss Steve Cotterill.

The club finally appointed a new manager, with Michael Appleton being given the role on November 10. However, Vladimir Antonov resigned as chairman after being arrested for money laundering and the club's parent company went into administration.

December>

A 2-1 win over Coventry City started a three-match unbeaten run that included a 1-0 win at Burnley. The derby against fierce rivals and league leaders Southampton ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to a late equaliser from Joel Ward.

Pompey ended the year with a 1-1 draw against Leicester City. With their poor away form, Portsmouth will be relying on their games at Fratton Park, having not lost there in two months.
