Porto fire head coach Jose Peseiro

Jose Peseiro has been sacked by Porto after less than five months in charge.

The 56-year-old arrived at the Estadio do Dragao with the team third in Primeira Liga and he was unable to improve upon that position, finishing 15 points adrift of rivals and champions Benfica.

"They were only a few months, but of great work and dedication in the interests of Porto," Peseiro said in a statement.

"Myself and the coaching staff did everything we could to be worthy of this club and bring happiness to the fans. Unfortunately, for various reasons, we couldn't give it to them."

Porto ended the campaign by losing the Portuguese Cup final on penalties to Braga.
