Portland Timbers 2-1 San Jose Earthquakes

Portland Timbers have pulled of a major shock by beating Western Conference leaders San Jose Earthquakes at Jeld-Wen Field.

The Oregon franchise, who were second bottom in the table prior to the match, took a deserved lead on the half-hour mark as Danny Mwanga arrowed the ball into the top corner to round off a rapid counter-attack led by Franck Songo'o.

Jack Jewsbury bundled home following a corner kick to double Timbers' advantage 14 minutes into the second half before Alan Gordon pulled a goal back for Earthquakes 16 minutes from time.

Kris Boyd could have restored his side's two-goal lead late on, but the former Rangers striker spurned two good chances.

Portland have moved above Chivas USA into seventh place.
