Chicago Fire see off 10-man Philadelphia Union

Chicago Fire moved off the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a hard-fought victory over 10-man Philadelphia Union.

The hosts took the lead eight minutes before the break when Harrison Shipp teed up Adailton and the Brazilian defender managed to slot the ball past Rais M'Bolhi.

Kennedy Igboananike came close to adding a second for the Fire early in the second half when he brought a save out of the Union shot-stopper.

Sebastien Le Toux squandered a chance to equalise for Philadelphia on the hour mark when he fired an effort wide of the target.

The visitors' hopes of a revival looked to be in tatters when Fred, on as a substitute in the 67th minute, was sent off for fighting only five minutes later.

Chicago were able to hold on for a victory that moves them up to seventh in the standings.
