Conor Sammon brace inspires Sheffield United to victory over Peterborough United

Sammon brace inspires United to victory

Goals either side of half time from Conor Sammon helped to ensure that Sheffield United held off a resurgent Peterborough United side to claim a 3-1 away win in League One this evening.

Posh started the game in a lively fashion and they carved out a positive chance when Michael Bostwick cut inside before unleashing a shot that flew just wide of the target.

United's first major chance arrived just under the 15-minute mark, when Sammon saw his effort saved smartly by Ben Alnwick.

The Blades continued to push for an opener and they found it just a few seconds later, as Sammon returned once more to convert into the top right corner following Billy Sharp's productive pass.

Peterborough came close to equalising after 20 minutes, only for Marcus Maddison to see his long-range effort evade the top corner by a matter of inches.

The away side might have put themselves two goals to the good before the break, but Jay McEveley could only head over with just the keeper to beat.

The hosts came out of the blocks quickest in the second period and Harry Anderson almost brought his side level, his shot being saved in the top centre of goal by Mark Howard.

Peterborough's early pressure proved vital as they dragged things back to 1-1 through Souleymane Coulibaly, who collected Jack Collison's through-ball to pull off a memorable strike across the face of goal.

United's Sharp took some time to grow back into the game, but he was almost the difference as his shot had Alnwick scrambling to cover his ground.

The visitors kept on the front foot after the missed chance, and they immediately found themselves with a second goal to go back in front when Sammon found the bottom right corner with a neat finish.

The Blades sealed the victory with just over five minutes to go, when Jose Baxter caught hold of James Wallace's pass to fire into the top-left corner and leave the final score at 3-1.

The victory sees the Blades bounce back from a heavy opening-day loss to Gillingham by recording three wins on the bounce, two of which have come away from home.
