Preview: Peterborough United vs. Cardiff City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Championship clash between Peterborough United and Cardiff City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Peterborough United and Cardiff City will be aiming to build on weekend wins when they face off at London Road on Tuesday evening.

The Bluebirds beat Blackpool 2-0 on Saturday, a few hours after Peterborough had themselves picked up a first win of the Championship campaign at home to Derby County.

Peterborough's victory against Derby was as dramatic as they come, with Harrison Burrows and Siriki Dembele scoring in stoppage time to earn their side a 2-1 comeback victory.

United were facing a second loss in a row to begin the new league campaign, having gone down 2-0 to Luton Town the week before, after Jack Stretton had given County the lead.

Thanks to their incredible late double, though, the Posh are off the mark with their first three points since earning promotion back to the second tier.

Darren Ferguson's men will now be eager to build some momentum heading into a run of games with Cardiff, Preston North End and West Bromwich Albion before the end of the month.

Cardiff have the same aim, of course, having eased to victory at Bloomfield Road on Saturday to make it four points from their opening two games.

City were a little underwhelming in their 1-1 opening game draw with Barnsley, but they were good value for their victory against Blackpool and are one of 10 teams on four points.

Leandro Bacuna headed the Welsh side in front on the seaside and Kieffer Moore added a late second for what Mick McCarthy will hope is the first of 20-plus goals this term.

This will be the first midweek league game of 2021-22 for both sides, and Cardiff have a good record on Tuesdays, losing just one of their last 10 games on that day of the week.

Each of Peterborough's last four Championship games on a Tuesday have ended level, meanwhile, with the last two ending goalless.

Team News

Dembele has been strongly linked with a move away from Peterborough, but he made the most of his first appearance of the campaign by netting the winner against Derby.

Ferguson may be tempted to recall the striker in midweek, possibly at the expense of Jack Marriott, who made his full debut against his former side on Saturday.

The hosts are expected to still be without central midfielder Jack Taylor, but Ferguson otherwise has a full squad to choose from.

As for Cardiff, McCarthy may reluctantly make a change or two to his starting lineup in order to keep his players as fresh as possible.

Will Vaulks and Moore, the latter of whom was late returning to training due to his Euro 2020 exploits with Wales, are contenders to come into the XI.

Bacuna was heavily involved against Barnsley and Blackpool in an attacking role and should retain his place here, with Ryan Giles positioned on the opposite side.

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Pym; Kent, Thompson, Beevers; Ward, Norburn, Randall, Grant, Butler; Clarke-Harris, Dembele

Cardiff City possible starting lineup:
Phillips; Morrison, Flint, Nelson; Ng, Pack, Vaulks, Bagan; Giles, Moore, Bacuna

We say: Peterborough United 1-3 Cardiff City

This fixture tends to provide goals, with 18 being scored in the last three league meetings between the sides at the London Stadium at an average of six a game.

We cannot see this latest encounter being quite as high-scoring, but City have goals in their side and should head back to South Wales with a second win in the space of three days.
