Charlton Athletic cruise into League Cup third round

Charlton Athletic continue their fine start to the season with a 4-1 League Cup second-round victory over Peterborough United.

Charlton Athletic debuatant Mikhail Kennedy inspired his side to a 4-1 victory over Peterborough United in the second round of the League Cup this evening, scoring the first goal and winning a penalty in the second half.

The game was barely three minutes old when Kennedy put Charlton ahead on his first-team debut with a simple finish from Zakarya Bergdich's pass.

Charlton continued to dominate with Callum Harriott and Karlan Ahearne-Grant both going close.

However, Nick Pope had to be alert to keep his side ahead and he made a reflex save to keep out a deflected shot after half an hour.

Four minutes before the break, Jordan Cousins almost extended Charlton's lead but his effort dipped narrowly over the bar.

Kennedy began the second half as the centre of attention again and won his side a penalty after being tripped by Kieran Sadlier.

Ahearne-Grant stepped up to bury the resulting spot kick and double the away side's lead.

Charlton showed their confidence in the closing stages and grabbed their third through Ahmed Kashi, who lobbed the goalkeeper from 35 yards, before Igor Vetokele volleyed into the net with three minutes remaining.

Peterborough's Jermaine Anderson netted in stoppage time, but it did nothing to affect the result.
