The two teams were deadlocked as the match headed for its final 15 minutes, but a second booking for Victor Wanyama left Southampton one player short and Norwich made use of that advantage just three minutes later.

Norwich created the best two chances in the opening 30 minutes, but Jonny Howson could only fire his effort wide of the post, before Dieumerci Mbokani came within inches of scoring after a cross from Nathan Redmond.

Shane Long and Jordy Clasie both had opportunities for the Saints late in the first period, but both players were denied by Norwich stopper Declan Rudd, whose performances continue to keep John Ruddy on the sidelines.

The second period brought few chances for either team, but the match turned in the 73rd minute when Wanyama was sent off for a second bookable offence on Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe and just three minutes later, Tettey beat Maarten Stekelenburg with a strike from distance.

Southampton had plenty of the ball as the match drew to a close, but a flurry of late substitutions interrupted the flow of the match and the home team managed to hold on to secure all the points against Ronald Koeman's side.

The result has moved Norwich into 14th position in the Premier League table and they are now just one point and indeed one place behind Southampton, who have lost eight of their 20 league games this season.
