Newcastle planning January move for Ward-Prowse?

Newcastle United have reportedly planned an approach for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse in the upcoming January transfer window.

With the wealthy Saudi Public Investment Fund now in charge of the club, the Magpies are said to be planning a major window after the turn of the year, with the new hierarchy keen to bolster the squad and avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

According to Football Insider, Saints captain Ward-Prowse has been identified as the latest target for the St. James' Park outfit, with Newcastle expected to open talks over a possible deal.

The Englishman signed a new contract with his boyhood club in the summer after interest from Aston Villa, but the Saints are now expected to have to fend off more interest, with Magpies director Amanda Staveley and her advisers keen on bolstering the midfield at St. James' Park.

Ward-Prowse has now made 331 appearances for Southampton, netting 35 goals and providing 42 assists while also earning nine England caps.

After nine games of the new season, Newcastle find themselves without a win in the Premier League, and they currently occupy 19th spot with four points.
