Steve McClaren determined to keep Fabricio Coloccini at Newcastle United

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren reveals that he is determined to keep captain Fabricio Coloccini at the club amid reported interest in the Argentine.

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has reiterated his desire to see captain Fabricio Coloccini remain at the club.

The 33-year-old has been linked with a move away from St James' Park to join up with former manager Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace and also to Olympiacos.

However, McClaren is determined to keep the experienced defender with the Magpies after identifying him as a key player for his team this season.

When asked if Coloccini would remain at the club, the 54-year-old told reporters: "I don't see why not. He's got a year left on his contract.

"I've come in and they asked me to have a look at the players. I've looked and Coloccini is one player I said I want to be here."

Coloccini joined Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008.
