Newcastle United looking to set club record against Southampton

Newcastle looking to set club record against Southampton

Newcastle United will hope to set a new club record when they square off against Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies are currently enjoying their best start to a Premier League campaign for some time after collecting 24 points from their opening 13 matches.

On the back of last weekend's 4-0 victory over Aston Villa, Newcastle sit in fourth position in the table, two points adrift of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

That result ensured that the North East giants equalled a 16-year record in the top flight, with 16 points being recorded in a calendar month for the first time since 2006.

While setting club records is not on Eddie Howe's list of priorities, another will be achieved on Sunday if Newcastle can win at St Mary's this weekend.

Should they collect three points on the South coast, Newcastle will have recorded maximum points in successive away league games with Southampton for the first time.

In the most recent 34 corresponding fixtures, Newcastle have posted just four wins, two of which have been come in their last three visits to Southampton's home ground.

On March 7, 2020, in the week before football was brought to an halt due to the coronavirus pandemic, a late Allan Saint-Maximin goal earned Newcastle a 1-0 victory.

Earlier this year, almost two years to the day of their last triumph at St Mary's, goals from Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes earned Newcastle a comeback 2-1 win.

Southampton have prevailed in just one of their last 10 meetings with Newcastle, that encounter sandwiched between the aforementioned games.
