Striker Marvin Emnes bagged his sixth goal of the season on 21 minutes when he turned the ball past Sky Blues keeper Joe Murphy to give Boro the lead.
It wasn't until the 76th minute that the visitors levelled, with Lukas Jutkiewicz heading in after Roy O'Donovan's shot had been parried.
Middlesbrough travel to Burnley on Saturday, September 10, while Coventry host Midlands rivals Derby County.
