Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will not grant Sergio Romero his wish of leaving the club on loan in January, according to a report.

Jose Mourinho has reportedly told back-up goalkeeper Sergio Romero that he will not be allowed to leave Manchester United during the winter transfer window.

The Argentina international is understood to have asked for a temporary switch as he fears losing his place ahead of next summer's World Cup finals.

According to The Sun, however, Mourinho instead wants the 30-year-old to continue providing cover for undisputed number one David de Gea until the end of the campaign.

A source is quoted by the publication as saying: "Jose does not want to let Sergio leave next month after his worries over the World Cup. His agent Mino Raiola was hoping for a favour by letting him get regular football somewhere for a bit.

"He loves it here and it is only the Argentina issue that is wanting him to just move on for a little while. The thing is Jose isn't in the mood to do anyone any favours at present and Sergio knew the score this season."

Romero, who signed a new contract at Old Trafford earlier this year, has been restricted to just four outings this term - two in the EFL Cup and two in the Champions League.
