Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti emerges as a transfer target for Manchester United, according to a report.

Manchester United could reportedly move for Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti during this summer's transfer window if they are unable to secure a deal for Real Madrid's Raphael Varane.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are expected to be in the market for a new central defender ahead of the 2021-22 campaign, and Varane has been strongly linked with a switch to Old Trafford.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils view Umtiti as a potential alternative in the event that they are unable to sign the Los Blancos defender.

The report claims that Umtiti is expected to be available for transfer this summer, having struggled for regular action during the 2020-21 season, while Ronald Koeman's side are keen to trim their wage budget in the coming months due to the financial impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

The 27-year-old has missed a lot of football this season due to a knee problem, making just 14 appearances in all competitions for the Catalan club.

Liverpool are also said to be exploring the possibility of signing Umtiti this summer.
