Chris Smalling 'on verge of completing Roma transfer'

Roma have reportedly reached a breakthrough with Manchester United over Chris Smalling, with the centre-back set to join the Italian giants on a permanent deal.

Smalling excelled during a loan spell at Roma last season, and the defender has not turned out for United this term amid the speculation surrounding his future.

According to The Athletic, after a series of frustrating talks, the two clubs have now reached an agreement over a transfer fee, which is believed to be above £18m.

The report claims that now only minor details need to be discussed, meaning that the Italian outfit could officially announce the 30-year-old as a new signing soon.

Smalling made 37 appearances for Roma during the 2019-20 campaign, contributing three goals and two assists in the process as he made a strong impression.

The former Fulham youngster has won two Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford.
